Why Do We Fart? 🤔
Passing gas may be embarrassing for most of us, but it’s one of the most common bodily functions of all time. Here’s the scoop on farts:
What is a fart? Flatulence, also known as “farting” or “passing wind,” is the passing of gas from the digestive system out of the back passage. Flatus is the medical word for gas generated in the intestinal tract.
Why do we fart? Farts are caused by trapped air, which can come from many sources. Some of it is air that we’ve swallowed while chewing or drinking. Some air is caused by gas seeping into our intestines from our blood, and some gas is produced by chemical reactions in our intestines or bacteria living in our guts.
Why do farts smell? The gas within our digestive system consists mainly of nitrogen and oxygen. When there’s a smell, it’s usually due to small amounts of sulfur gases. If food hasn’t been digested properly, it starts to decompose (rot), releasing sulfur. Pee-yew! 💩
Fun Fact: Smelling farts might actually be good for you! Studies suggest that hydrogen sulfide (the stinky compound in farts) may protect against cell damage and even prevent cancer. Read more here.
Why Farting is Awesome:
Farts are nature's way of saying, "I'm alive!"
Holding in farts can turn you into a human balloon. 🎈
Farts are 99% odorless... unless you had beans. 🌱
Silent but deadly farts are the ninjas of the gas world. 🥷
The Science Behind Farts:
Did you know? The average person farts 14 times a day. That's over 5,000 farts a year! Farts are made of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane, and hydrogen. Methane is flammable, so be careful around open flames! 🔥
